"Baked apples" with lots of yummy cinnamon have made a appearance as a side dish many times for dinner in our household. But one night, I got a little too "timer" happy with the microwave, put them in a bit too long, and made applesauce instead!
Homemade applesauce makes a great snack or can be used in place of oil in making baking recipes, too! If you haven't before, you should add a little bit of applesauce to your pancake batter! YUM!
MICROWAVE APPLESAUCE
This is truly a simple and easy recipe.
Just gather the necessary ingredients and kitchen utensils to prep your apples and you're just minutes away from having homemade applesauce! Doesn't get any better than that!
What you need:
- 4 medium sized Apples (Gala or Fuji are my favorite!)
- cinnamon
- sugar
- pinch or two of nutmeg
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE MICROWAVE APPLESAUCE
Begin by washing and peeling your apples...
Next slice your apples using a similar apple slicing tool or using a knife and place them in a (microwave safe) glass baking dish....
Now add your cinnamon and nutmeg.... I'd say a tablespoon plus of cinnamon and a teaspoon of nutmeg; but really it is going to depend on your taste buds!
We like a lot of cinnamon around here!
OPTIONAL: Add about a 1/2 tablespoon to 1TBS. of white sugar-- the amount also will depend on how sweet you want it.
UPDATE: We make our microwave applesauce without added sugar nowadays, and it is still just as tasy!
Next put the bowl in the microwave and casually place the lid on top; you want air to be able to escape, but you don't want applesauce everywhere!
Put in microwave for 5-6 minutes, or until the apples look and feel quite tender. You want them to be soft enough to mash further with a fork.
If you'd rather opt for "baked apples" (not musy) put in the microwave for 3-4 minutes or until just tender....
Stir it up and Enjoy!
Gather, chop, and microwave!
Easy peasy and healthy, too!
This is a great recipe to get kids involved in the kitchen! Little ones will need supervision while cutting, but from start to finish it's totally kid-friendly.
And what better way to enjoy their effort than to eat while listening to a read-aloud!
Mmm yummy, so easy and delicious :)
